"What is this?" Is a more direct translation, but I've seen too many dubbed anime where 'Nanda Kore?' is translated as 'What the hell!?'. I would wager it's a figure of speech for that over there. Or maybe the dubbing houses are incompetent, but I doubt that since they've been on point for a while now.
